     Thank you to all the members who promptly paid for their 2010 dues.  If you haven't yet, please mail a check payable to "Midlothian Chapter No. 85, OES" to our Secretary, Dorothy Butler, as soon as possible.  A reminder that when dues are two years past due, a member can be suspended from the Chapter.  Annual Dues are due on January 1st.  What a gift we have ... to be able to visit any OES chapter in the world as long as we are holding a current Dues Card.

A SECRETARY'S DREAM

The sweetest words of tongue or pen,

That find response in the hearts of men,

And stir them with a joyous thrill,

Are those old words, with sweet refrain --

That light the eye and soothe the brain,

And faces grim, with smiles infuse --

"Dear Secretary:  Herewith check for dues!"

A Kindly Deed

Someone did a kindly deed,

It helped you all the day;

Do it again for someone else

Who needy, passes your way.

Somebody smiled, a cheerful smile,

It made the day seem bright;

It was only a little thing, you say --

But those little things have might.

Those little things -- are they little things?

Just think how the whole long day

An unkind word of slighting tone

Has hidden the sun away.

Please make it your responsibility to notify our

Sister Anna Helms, P.M., Worthy Matron

or Sister Dianna M. Gillard, P.M. , Conductress

of any joys, illness or distress among our members.

Also, please notify Sister Dianna M. Gillard, P.M., Conductress

of any addition, correction or deletion

to our Chapter Directory.

Happy Birthday

August

8  - Carri Ann Hatchett

14 - Connie Roden

28 - Anna H. Helms, P.M., W.M

31 - Richard (Rick) Saunders

A warm and special message

Is being sent your way

To let you know

That many thoughts

Are with you today

And every day.

If your birthday is not listed,

please let our Worthy Matron know,

we do not want to forget anyone!

Teamwork

The world is full of problems,

There's much to cause distress;

We all are bowed beneath the cares

That daily round us press;

There's only tone solution,

'Tis simply stated thus;

"A little less of you and me,

A little more of us."

A flake of snow is very small;

'Tis lost to sight quite quickly,

But many flakes, combined, will fill

The roads and pathways thickly.

United we can face the fight,

Without distress or fuss;

"A little less of you and me,

A little more of us."

Midlothian Masonic Family

Midlothian Lodge No. 211

First Wednesday

7:30 P.M.

            We are fortunate to be able to share the Midlothian Masonic Temple with the group who owns the building – Midlothian Masonic Lodge No. 211.  This is an active lodge and supports the Eastern Star.

In the early 1700's, the area known as Midlothian was a coal mining community. The first Masonic Lodge in the community was known as Black Heath Lodge No. 89, which was chartered on October 8, 1853. In 1860, the proceedings of the Grand Lodge show that the charter was suspended. There is no indication as to why this Lodge did not continue. After the War Between the States was over, and the surrender at Appomattox, in April 1865, a group of Master Masons received permission to rejuvenate the old Black Heath Lodge under the new name of Midlothian Lodge No. 211, on April 5, 1866, with the following officers:

          A. S. McRae                           Worshipful Master

R. Lindsey Walker                  Senior Warden

W. E. Martin                           Junior Warden

         In 1875, Brother Robert Marks of Midlothian Lodge made a gift of land to the Lodge. On July 5, 1875, dedication of the new Lodge building was held and this same building has been in constant use since then with several alterations and a major addition in 1983, which more than doubled the size of the building. The building has been kept as near original as possible. The Lodge has been involved in the cornerstone laying of most all of the older Churches in the area, although in more recent years, the churches have not used the Masons for this purpose as often as in the past. In 1882 an explosion ripped through the Grove Shaft Mines, killing thirty-two men, their bodies entombed in the mines some 800 feet below the surface. Four of these men were Masons and members of Midlothian Lodge. These thirty-two men left behind twenty-seven widows and one hundred eight destitute children. The communities from all over helped these families. The Grand Lodge of Virginia collected contributions from the Lodges of the entire state totaling $924.30 and Grand Secretary W. B. Issacs presented it to the Lodge to help the widows and children of the four Brothers who had died in the mines.

         Dr. P. S. Hancock was Worshipful Master of Midlothian Lodge for many years and was loved by the entire community. Shortly after his death in 1893, the citizens of the community dedicated a monument in his honor. There were eight hundred people present for the dedication ceremony, they came from all walks of life and some traveled a great distance to be there.

        The Lodge observed its fiftieth anniversary on September 4, 1916, with an old time barbecue, Brunswick stew and fried chicken meal, with state Governor Stuart being one of the speakers. In 1966, the Lodge celebrated its one-hundredth birthday and published a history book. Brother G. I. Johnson, spent approximately three years compiling the necessary material to be included in the history. This research must have been a gigantic task and Brother Johnson did an outstanding job, most of this information was taken from that text.

        Most Worshipful George William Farley, a Past Master of this Lodge, served as Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1990.

Black Heath Lodge No. 1982

Daylight Lodge

Second Wednesday

11:00 A.M.

The history of Black Heath Daylight Lodge No. 1982 is necessarily a short one. The Lodge received its dispensation on September 8, 1982, and received its charter on April 8, 1983.

       Midlothian Lodge No. 211 helped this Lodge in many ways. They gave the use of their temple, rent-free until 1988. They also gave this Lodge their old officer's aprons, and use of the kitchen and dinning facilities. Many of the members of this Lodge are members of Midlothian Lodge No. 211.

The Holy Bible on the Altar was a gift from Mrs. Julian C. Roden, widow of Most Worshipful Julian C. Roden, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1969.

Midlothian Bethel No. 51

1st and 3rd Sunday

6:00 P.M.

     The International Order of Job's Daughters is the ONLY international organization for girls that requires of ALL OF ITS MEMBERS to have a relationship to a Master Mason, and while it is no part of the Masonic Fraternity, this pre-requisite ties it closely to the Masonic Order. (A daughter of a Majority Member shall also be eligible for membership.)

     In general, the Book of Job teaches us a Masonic optimistic lesson - Not to fall in despair; it shows that Masonic ideas are imperishable. We see this exemplified in Job's life. Job saw the growth and up-building of his home, he also saw its ruin. but again he beheld its revival and reconstruction.

     Special emphasis is given to the thought that "To Be Fair Is to Do Good" and "Virtue Is a Quality Which Highly Adorns Woman."

     This organization is truly International in scope. At present there are Bethels in the Continental United States, and Alaska; Provinces of Canada, Australia, the Philippines and Brazil with other countries expressing interest.

     Job's Daughters is operated in a democratic manner, similar to Masonic lodges (and other Masonic bodies) function. In Bethels, adult workers known as the Bethel Guardian Council (consisting of a Bethel Guardian, Associate Bethel Guardian, and others) supervise each Bethel and are appointed yearly - with special consideration given to recommendations from the girls. These Council members are selected from Master Masons and women over twenty years of age who are wives, daughters, granddaughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, half-sisters, or widows of Master Masons or women who are members of an organization basing its membership requirements on Masonic relationship and Majority Members of Job's Daughters.

     Job's Daughter's official charity is The HIKE Fund, Inc. (The Hearing Impaired Endowment Fund). The purpose of the HIKE is to provide hearing devices for children with hearing impairments between the ages of newborn and twenty years whose parents are unable to meet this special need financially. An estimate of 100 children are provided with hearing devices each year.

     Virginia's Grand Guardian Council, as well as Supreme Guardian Council and other Masonic Organizations present college scholarships to deserving young members of the Order. In some cases (but not always) special consideration is given to scholarships for certain fields of study. In all cases, the goal is to assist young women in becoming the business, social, and government leaders of tomorrow.

THE FOUR CANDLES BURNED SLOWLY

Their Ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak ...

The first candle said, "I am Peace,

but these days, nobody want to keep me lit".

Then Peace's flame slowly diminishes and goes out completely.

The second candle says, "I am Faith,

but these days, I am no longer indispensable"

Then Faith's flames slowly diminishes and goes out completely.

Sadly the third candle spoke, "I am Love

and I haven't the strength to stay lit any longer".

"People put me aside and don't understand my importance.

They even forget to love those who are nearest to them"

And waiting no longer, Love goes out completely.

Suddenly ... A child enters the room and sees the three

candles no longer burning.  The child begins to cry,

"Why are you not burning?

You are suppose to stay lit until the end".

Then the fourth candle spoke gently to the little boy,

"Don't be afraid, for I am Hope, and will I still burn,

we can re-light the other candles".

With shinning eyes the child took the Candles of Hope

and lit the other three candles.

Never let the Flame of Hope go out of your life.

With Hope, no matter how bad things look and are ...

Peace, Faith and Love can Shine Brightly in our lives.
